So what do you think? Surprised that the juggernaut that is The City & The City got beat to the finish?

By the looks of things, The Windup Girl is turning into the juggernaut. And as I thought The City & The City was brilliant, it means Bacigalupi’s book is heading to the top of my TBR list.
Wow! We were all focused on The City & The City and Boneshaker because they were nominated head to head. Then out of nowhere (not if I was paying attention) The Windup Girl comes in and wins Nebula, Campbell, ends up in a three-way tie (First Novel) with The City & The City (Fantasy), Boneshaker (SciFi), and can now win the Hugo. If it wins the Hugo and Nebula and Campbell… oh wow, it’s one of the elite SciFi novel award winners. Bam! Shake n’ Bake. That just happened.
I’m surprised. I’ve read all three books and I think The City and the City is far superior to the others, only Boneshaker comes close. I thought Julian Comstock was outright bad (the first third was good, but the next two felt like a very long epilogue to the first) and the Windup Girl felt too much like the first novel it is, even though it was good in spite of that. I would give all awards to Miéville without blinking
I’ve not read any of the three but I’m considering The City & The City. Been wanting to read Mieville for some time but haven’t got around to him yet. Is City a good place to start?
Actually, it’s the first book I’ve read by Miéville, so I don’t know if it’s the right place to start. I have lots of friends who like him and who say that although The City and the City is very good, it’s not very similar to his other books. I don’t know if this is good or bad, though. Here’s my review if you’re interested: http://www.snigel.nu/?p=5423.
Oh, and in case you’re even more interested, I’ve reviewed The Windup Girl as well: http://www.snigel.nu/?p=6270. I haven’t had time/inspiration to review Julian Comstock yet, but I suppose I should before I forget the story entirely. 🙂
@Olle: Your City review makes me want to read it even more. I’ll check out your Windup Girl review too. Thanks for the links.
