Once again zelazny resorts to deus ex machina. The sudden appearance of the spikard giving merlin almost unlimited powers is just plain lazy and boring. And suddenly characters change their allegiances again. However that said it was an enjoyable read with a continuation of interesting ideas. A shame that the slight cliffhanger will never be resolved.
