Salvage

This novel aims high and almost gets there. There is potential in this story that follows a critical period in the life of Ava, a young woman, born on a space-faring vessel in a patriarchal society that holds taboos against the "dirty" earthborn. The novel has a captivating tone and an intriguing world. Unfortunately for me, it never quite delivers on its potential. I never quite believe in some of the logic as events unfold. I never quite believe in some of the choices Ava makes along her path of maturation. In short, it felt like the story arc and trajectory were more influence by the author than by the inner agency of the characters. Even so, I am glad to have come across this debut novel.

NOTE: This review is based on the audiobook read by Johanna Parker who was very good.
