This is the story of how a civilization in crisis looks outside itself for an enemy to blame, and a reason to ignore or suppress the realities in favor of war on an unknown enemy.
This short work is an evocative, engaging read in this version, but the odd changes in tone and perspective make it apparent why Delany rewrote the book later when the trilogy was complete. It might be better to read the revised version instead for the improvements Delany made.
I reviewed only 'Captives' as I did not buy the Ace Double version.
