When it comes to worst-case scenarios, home invasion and world apocalypse stand at either end of the spectrum. The first is intensely personal and the latter involves the whole damn world. In The Cabin at the End of the World Paul Tremblay has it both ways and offers us an apocalyptic home invasion.

Tremblay fills his cast with likable people, despicable people, frightened people and the possibly insane. His third -person, present-tense narration makes the whole thing read something like a film treatment, especially in the action bits. If a movie contract is in this novel's future, I recommend Pascal Laugier for director. He brought us the brilliant but almost too-painful-to-watch original French version of Martyrs
