I re-read this book recently, a couple decades since the last time I read it. It is still good, but doesn't hold up to the memory I had of it. This doesn't make it bad. In fact I think it's a good way to dive into the genre of Vampire books after having read the classic Dracula by Bram Stoker and Fledgling by Octavia Butler. It's just that my tastes have changed and I have become less (not more) patient over the years and knowing the story had me wanting things to happen quicker! The writing is detailed and quite textured and sumptuous. I did feel on my second reading that it was wordy in places and the main character was a bit whiney in places as well. Still it's good and I recommend it to anyone who likes gothic novels or wants a well done vampire novel. Compared to a lot of the mediocer vampire centered fiction that has been written in the past decade it's a masterpiece.
