This is a brilliant novel, with well-wrought similes, natural dialogue, evocative descriptions. The story is a non-traditional whodunit that unfolds at a deliciously unhurried pace; the characters are vivid and real. Chabon's language is a rich blended soup of English and Yiddish. There is longing in this book, and bleakness, along with love and humor and fear and despair. Life. This novel is also, subtlely, an alternate history that feels very real. This is a good, deep world to dive into, an engaging, gratifying, satisfying read.
