The Trial

That was... brutal.

I never thought of The Trial as work of horror, so I was intrigued to see it on "Best of" horror lists.

Now, having read it, I still don't think of it as a horror story, and yet it is horrifying. The forces at work here are as horrifying and incomprehensible as anything Lovecraft could dream up in his fevered little mind. But unlike Lovecraft, they are all too human and believable... so does that make them even more horrifying?
