The essence of this book is about finding out who we are as a person -- and deciding whether that is who we want to continue to be, or if we want to make ourselves better... and the possible sacrifices we might have to make to be true to ourselves and become the person we really want to be.
I thought it was good, with really interesting worldbuilding, different unique aliens, and characters that I could care about, but the deus-ex-machinas of [redacted] made it seem rather contrived and too much like a Hollywood script. After the first 1/4 to 1/3 of the book, I was really enthused, but then as the book went on, I thought that the "wow, this is great" factor went down considerably. I'm still glad that I read it, and I will probably recommend it to others and read the sequel(s), but I won't be touting it as award-worthy.
