Ugh. This might be one fo the few books I've read where the movie adaptation was signficantly better than the book. In fact, I was surprised at how little the movie had to do with teh source material. Anyway, I'm glad of it. I understand why this book is included in "best of" book lists, becuase it's well-written and turns the standard alien encounter narrative on its head. But reading this book was like reading a Lars Van Trier movie. You can appreciate its technical and artistic competence, but uliimately you're left with a thoroughly unenjoyable experience that leaves you kind of wondering what the point was. (And also with a nagging ambivalence about having a man explain to you about what ti's like to be a woman in a man's world.)
