I was assigned the book The Golem and the Jinni for the 1st quarter of the Apocalypse Whenever groups Bossy Book Challenge over on Goodreads, "Set in a country you do not live in." This book is set in Syria, Poland, and New York City. I am not as keen on fantasy novels as I am on other genres, so I started this book with some trepidation. The thing is, this book falls more into a magical realism. I guess I'm just not keen on "High Fantasy" because I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were as engaging as the world building. I could easily visualize the Shtetl in Poland, the Syrian deserts, the teeming streets of New York City. I was fully vested in the stories of both the Jinni, Ahmad, and the Golem, Chava. I watched with anticipation as their stories drew ever closer together. And when they came together the story became even more intriguing. Although on my own I might never have read this book, I am so glad to have been given the chance. It is my understanding that there is a second book to be released later this year (2021). I will be looking forward to reading this second book.
