Outstanding example of 50's Cold War SF, but more as a cautionary apocalypse tale than anti-communist propaganda. As such, it does have a depressing tone, but the characters are interesting and approach the inevitable from their own perspectives. It is somewhat refreshing in that the world doesn't turn violent post-apocalypse. Easy, quick read, highly recommended!
