This was a disappointing read.

According to the synopsis, de Rojas is a professor of the history of theatre. This perhaps explains why there is little description with the events instead depicted and explained by stitled conversations between the characters.

My frustration with this stylistic choice was exacerbated by the decision to render character's thoughts as direct speech.

It also didn't help that the book appeared to have been poorly edited with a number of paragraphs running into the next with no demarcation. (The book jumps around a lot and I could see this kind of elision working to deliberately inspite confusion, reflecting the psychological states of the characters. But it doesn't happen often enough or with any consistency, so I can only assume it is an error.)

No doubt some readers will appreciate the story more than I did and I'll continue seeking out science fiction from beyond the Anglophone 'canon', but this wasn't for me.
