A perfectly fine read, but just felt like a histosrical/reomatnic fiction, not actual fantasy. Aside from weaving in references to the grandmother telling the Briar Rose fairy tale to her grandchildren, ther were no speculative elements (improbably moments, yes, but those were not presented as actual "fantasy." Just the normal romatnic novel improbabiliy.) Also (no fault of it's own) it feels kind of dated, since it involves a journalist doing research by looking up things in atlases and filing book requests with libraries. I'm torn between whether I found those parts of the book charmingly retro or just kind of boring. Anyway, as I said, this was fine.
