An interesting twist on vampires, these folks come in two types - either eating books (and all printed material) or sucking up brains.
The geography of Britain was a factor in the story, and well described. I enjoyed many of the characters and the situations, especially the houses. There's another story to be told someday about how they each treat with (or work against) ordinary humans. I did like the moral dilemmas faced by the main characters.
Unlike other vampire stories, nobody wants to dominate mortals. Partly this could be the incredibly limited numbers, or partly it could be the huge technological debt they have racked up. All the knowledge these folks have gathered, yet much of it seems wasted. The story is a little slow in the beginning, and ends in a rush.
This is the author's first published novel, and it was nominated for some awards. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future - a novella "How to Cook and Eat the Rich" seems promising :)
