A short, engrossing read, more novella length. Danny March and Anne, our 2 protagonists and points of view for the is story, always seem to be on a collision course, but the way they meet at the end and the likely consequences surprised me. They live in a world where war has become ubiquitous. Danny is a war hero, brutally killing his opponents with flame throwers in one on one duels that slowly morph into more complicated fights. Danny's family has a rich military tradition, with his father and grandfather dying in war. Danny does not want this destiny for his son, but is trapped by circumstance. His fight to keep his son away from the insanity of war leads him to torture. Anne has given up her partner to this same war drive and has guilt over this which leads her to a peace commune that ultimately falls to the same violence that is engulfing the world, leading to her fateful meeting with Danny at the close of the book. Worth checking out.
