So, I read the prequel novella, Pale Dreamer before starting this, which set me up with certain expectations going into the series proper. And boy, were those expectations blasted out of the water. But in a good way.
This is a well-written alt-history story, with some very lovely world building and character work, and an intriguing take on the transdimensional invasion idea, the primary invaders in this case coming across as a wonderful mash-up of fae and (fallen?) angels.
It does have a romance element to it, which is very much slow-burn in this first book, and the main protagonist, Paige Mahoney, is very nicely written and kicks ass even when she's at her lowest. I would have liked to maybe get to know some of the supporting cast a bit better, but even with the narrative being told very much from a close perspective, we still get a fair amount of character development in there.
All in all, a good start to the series, and I will definitely be continuing with the rest.
