Klara and the Sun starts really strong. It had my attention with it's interesting concept and characters. I was looking forward to how Ishiguro explores artificial intelligence, and what it means to be human. The ending is also above average.
Unfortunately, most of this book, but especially the middle, was a drag to read. It was pretty boring, and at times downright dull. Sure, there were moments of intrigue that I enjoyed, but overall I was left perplexed that something with this much potential turned out so tepid. I really wanted to like it more than I did. I think it would've worked better for myself personally if it had taken the form of a short story or novella.
I do think that there is some interesting commentary on human loneliness, and the impact that AI has on our society. The concept of Klara replacing Joise should she pass away for the benefit of her grieving mother was novel and chilling. There was a good sense of melancholy that dominated the novel, which I enjoyed.
