I am in awe at how stories like this can exist and could have so easily slipped past my notice had another reader decided not to republish this novella. I am so grateful they did.

It’s stories like this that stay with you, surviving in dreamy memories of adventures once-read, until they are dug back up and introduced to a wave of new readers.

It’s a fairy-tale, feminine focused fantasy where the maiden doesn’t need rescuing from the dragon, where heroes are in fact a nuisance, and freedom to live a life unchained by the petty wars and whims of men is valued above all else.

Samantha Shannon’s introduction provides significant context to the author’s career and I will be searching for more and more Naomi Mitchison to read.
