This was another bad book in an overall pretty bad series. The reason the first book is good is that you can't wait for a plausible explanation for why everything that transpires happens. But as you get further and further into the series, you realize that at no point will you get a good explanation for why the Gladers have to do what they have to do. It's always too science-y for the literal kid geniuses to understand, maybe because the author himself isn't a genius and couldn't come up with a better explanation than "it's just too smart to understand." Add this on top of the many plot holes and completely unexplainable actions of characters, and you have a very unenjoyable read. Tresa's character arc is even more confusing after this novel, and she's even more unlikable. I liked the first half of the novel at least better than The Death Cure and The Kill Order because there weren't endless drawn out fight scenes. But the end of the novel disappointed me in that regard. If you counted all of the crazy fights Thomas gets into over the course of the entire series, you would have some absolutely stupid lucky odds for him being alive, but whatever. WICKED is always too smart when the plot needs them to be and also too dumb when the plot needs them to be. They are all-powerful but also make stupid mistakes all of the time. I could go on and on, but you probably have caught my drift at this point. I'm so annoyed that I'm a completionist who feels the obligation to read the Maze Cutter trilogy as well. I'm not too excited to say the least.
Read Primarily Because: Part of a series.
