Even though I'm a huge horror reader, I've never been a huge haunted house fan. But this novel was absolutely fantastic and completely knocked me out of the park. It's a slow burn; it takes a while for the story to really pick up, but once it does, it's the perfect example of a roller-coaster that you're screaming down at top speed. Noemí is one of the best MC's I've ever read; she's just such a literal ICON. Like holy moly top tier older sister vibes. The novel is just so darn believable too; it's so hard to replicate fictional events like they actually happened with characters reacting to things how actual people would, but this novel overall did an impeccable job of that. Hopelessness, witty conversation, old traditions, and beautiful writing. If that seems up your alley, I will say give this one a try, and even if it isn't, some books (like this one) defy what you normally might like because they are so good.
This book deserves all of the flowers (maybe mushrooms?) that it's gotten, five stars.
Read primarily because: originally picked up from the library because I had seen it trending so much on Goodreads.
