Three Ethshar books read, three protagonists put into situations not of their choosing. In this case, a strange inheritance - the title of Warlord of one of the small kingdoms. The punchline? they are about to be invaded - with the losing warlord usually put to death.
This book is a quick read of two halves and a lot of world building. Most of the action is in the second half, which is less about a Warlord than a Warlock. The Guerilla war with the misfit band of magickers is fun to read. I know the series comes back here later on from scanning the titles of this large and rambling book series.
This is probably the last Ethshar book I read back in the day. It was released in 1989, when I started my working career - currently on hiatus. Glad to be getting back to these books, which can probably be read in any order - but The Blood of a Dragon is next for me.
