This is a major disappointment, I'm afraid. I have no problem with the concept of the writer being a character in his/her own book and narrating the story but when the writer writes themselves into the story as just another character- in this case called the Convert, and never using first person singular at any point then it takes me right out of the story.

As soon as the Convert appeared on the scene I lost interest in the workings of the plot and It was almost a relief to finishThere's enough in Alif the Unseen to show that G.Willow Wilson has a nice turn of phrase and is a writer to watch but I honestly felt that this one promised a lot more than it actually delivered.
