I am a beginner in reading fantasy, and already the common tropes of mediaeval style society,-young boy who grows up to be a great person, magic skills, kingdoms under threat, plotting and political skulduggery, are all becoming very familar, and not really riveting to me.At least, having just dragged my self through the tedium of Terry Brooks Sword of Shannara ths was competently written, smooth and engaging to an extent, but having a very passive, morose, often selfpitying and surly boy telling the story in the first person rather bogged it all down and slowed the pace to a crawl. The characterization was fairly superficial but a few of the characters came alive, like Burrch andd Verity.A pleasant read, but not engaging enough for me to invest tiime in reading the whole series.
