Extract: This was the first Heinlein I'd read since Starship Troopers in college. I loved it. I was excited that I loved it. It redeemed Heinlein for me and gave me hope that he wasn't always trying to expound on his belief systems in his novels.

Update 3/2026

I reread this book for online book club.  I still think it’s an excellent story that’s well written, but this time, the misogyny did not go unnoticed.  Yes, it’s a product of its time, but the way Lawrence/Lorenzo/Chief treats his assistant Penny is icky.  There were many lines that were creepy, but the once from Lawrence directed toward Penny, like threatening to spank her fanny, were the worst.  Eventually, I was able to overlook these parts, but I still highlighted them on my e-reader copy and denounced them to myself.  I look forward to the discussion at book club to see what others say about the 1950’s context.
