Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor is a tale woven from many myths taken from African cultures, even while set in contemporary times. An American born Nigerian girl (whose family has returned to Nigeria) discovers that she has special abilities. She makes friends with two other teens who recognize her potential, and soon she is welcomed to the hidden world of African magic. Joined by another American transplant, this coven of four forms to train together to ready themselves for battle against a powerful demon who is using the mutilation and murder of of young children as sacrifices to bring the ultimate destructive and malevolent being back into the world.

This story has African culture: food, dress, music, markets, etc. intertwined with the characters, and the plot, giving it a wonderful richness and excellent sense of perspective and experience from nonwhite protagonists.

The plot line itself is a bit weak, and it is a tad too reminiscent of the Harry Potter world-ala close friends becoming trained in magic by masters, growing into teen romantic attractions, making foolish mistakes before saving the day. And there is a sequel on its way.
