YA Science Fiction written at a level that can be enjoyed by adults as well as teenagers

Following a devastating epidemic inflicted on her country through a biological weapon, Callie and her younger brother exist in a world populated by the only people who were able to get the vaccine in time to save them: Young people under 20 (Starters), the aged 60 years and over (Enders), and the few Middles who were considered important enough to receive the vaccine (politicians, scientists, the wealthy, celebrities, and other VIPs).

Because most of them became orphans with no property or wealth upon the death of their parents and had no surviving grandparents to look after them, Starters have become the country's underclass. Enders (who frequently live to be well over a hundred years of age) own all of the property, have all the money and resources, and take all the jobs. Starters hide out in abandoned buildings and forage for whatever scraps and leavings they can find to survive. If caught by Police, refugee Starters are taken to detention centers for incarceration.

A few Starters, however, try to improve their situation by becoming "Rentals"...
