This is the first Dean Koontz novel I read. It is also one of the first adult books I read after I finished reading children's fiction. This was in the early nineties when I was about 16.

It is still one of my favourite books and also one of the few books I have read twice. A lot of people think this is his best book and I think it could be.

The story is about a secret government experiment that creates animals with human level intelligence. We meet a dog that is taken in by a man whilst out walking, the dog is one of these animals. The other is a very nasty monster which is intent on finding the dog. A hitman is also looking for the dog.

Other characters appear but I do not want to spoil what happens. Some of the book can be very heartwarming and joyous and other parts are creepy and deal with horrible people/monsters. So a pretty standard Dean Koontz story.

Altogether I really enjoyed this book and as Isaid before it might well be his best. I can think of some that are equal and will be reviewing them soon.
