What is the Science Fiction Premise?

The title of Have Space Suit -- Will Travel says it all. The protagonist of this story owns a space suit, is snatched by aliens, and begins an odyssey through space. As one might imagine, this requires space travel, alien civilizations (there are a few), and other assorted Science Fiction ideas. They are there, but they are largely taken for granted. The one premise that is explored in detail is how a space suit works.

Is the science of the premise explored?

The science and engineering of a space suit is explored in various ways. We are provided details about how it is built and what it requires. We are offered an opportunity to observe its use in an extended lunar trek. And, we can observe its use in other situations. While not exactly a primer on space suits, it would certainly scratch the itch of a young reader of pulp magazines in the 50's.

Is the impact of the premise on an individual explored?

The protagonist's space suit keeps him alive. That's the premise's primary impact.

Is the impact of the premise on society explored?

There is almost no refection on the importance of space suits to future society.

How well written is the story?

This is not a deep story. Were it not for the detailed discussion of space suits, I would call it Space Opera, lacking in any SF premise of note. As it is, it is an ok adventure for young readers. (Probably prepubescent these days.) It is, however, an odyssey without a discernible course. Things happen to the protagonist; they are not planned.

Can I recommend the book?

Have Space Suit -- Will Travel will not be high on any of my lists of Science Fiction. The best I can say is that it is a good example of a Heinlein juvenile. While that might have some interest to the Science Fiction historian, it should not entice the rest of us. There are many other, better Heinlein stories from this time period and before including, Waldo, Magic, Inc., Double Star, and The Puppet Masters. If you have not read one of these others, then don't begin with Have Space Suit -- Will Travel.
