I never expected to find a gem when I reserved this book from the library! The copy I got had yellowing pages and tiny, tiny print, and it took me forever to get started with the story. But after the first 20 pages I was hooked. The story of Fevvers, Lizzie, and Walser is full of circus magic, smoke and mirrors, pervert individuals and all-enduring love. I especially liked the three different settings for the story, London, St. Petersburg, and Siberia, as they all portrayed a different combination of poverty and luxury.

Basically, the book tells the story of Fevvers, a woman who supposedly has wings. Walser decides to find out whether or not this is true, and starts to interview with Fevvers and her companion, Lizzie. What he finds is a world full of dirt and mysteries.
