A promising start, which fizzled at the end

If I had to characterize this book with a blurb, it would be "Childhood's End meets This Immortal meets X-Men".

The buzz, perhaps, is at fault -- because I was expecting so much more.

I enjoyed learning more about the culture of Lagos and Nigeria. But I have to admit that the pidgin English used for the vast majority of the dialogue made reading this book really hard work.

There are lots of interesting, intertwining elements to this story. But I felt that the author did not truly succeed in tying them together in an emotionally and narratively satisfying way.

It's certainly worth a read -- but don't put it at the top of your list ahead of books you're dying to read, and don't expect it to blow you away.
