When I read the Foundation trilogy some time ago, I was left with one overiding question: Why did the foundation fear the second foundation so? Foundation's Edge doesn't answer that question. The plot is driven by the foundations suspicion of the second foundation, even though they don't know for sure it even exists.

The answer to my question, I think, must simply be that Isaac Asimov needed that for the motivation that drove the plots. Foundations Edge does have a good, fairly complicated plot, typical of Asimov, and if you are an Asimov fan, you will enjoy it.

At the end of the book, the protagonist must make a choice, one of three. I actually thought he would choose none of those three, but rather a fourth. But he did not. He made his choice from among the three. He actually left the stage set for yet another foundation sequel. There were in fact two Foundation prequels written after Foundation's Edge, plus another sequel. I do intend to read them, I hope before the advent of the Second Empire.
