I've read a number of King novels, but by no means consider myself a King expert. My favorites of his novels I've read include The Stand, The Shining, Joyland, and the first few Dark Tower books. This novel is a tricky one from King that I enjoyed quite a bit. The characters and settings really pull you in on this one. Probably some of his best character work that I've read. I thought I knew where this novel was going, but I was wrong. I thought Charles Jacobs fascination with electricity was heading towards a power of some kind such as in Carrie or The Dead Zone. I was dead wrong. King dips into the territory of another horror master and accomplishes something different from his other works. I won't give any spoilers here. Worthwhile for any King fan or anyone who enjoys solid characters. King once again pulls from his own issues with substance abuse and adds some real weight to the character of Jamie. Well written enough that those who are not horror fans could appreciate the novel for the writing itself.
