This HAS to be one of the seminal books of my teenagehood: purchased at a second-hand dealer in the midle of Africa; it turns out to be one of the better books I have ever read.
Seriously: my version had a man with one eye at 90 degrees to the other on the cover, and if that doesn't describe David Bowie, who later starred in the film....
It was sad, it was haunting, and the measure of it is that I remember it still - and I haven't read it for 45 years. Truly something that any genuine student of SF should read - now!
