I really, honestly don't see what the big deal about this book is. I read it and I didn't completely hate it. It took quite a long time to really get going but once the "vampire baseball" (one of the dumber ideas in the book) scene ended and James, the tracker, was hunting Bella, it got pretty interesting. Unfortunately, this happens like 2/3 of the way through the book.

Those first parts are filled with such inane lines as, "He unleashed the full power of his eyes on me" and "It was hard to believe that someone as beautiful as he was could be real."

And who could forget this exchange?

"'Are you hungry?"

"No." I didn't feel like telling him that my stomach was already full... of butterflies.

Such pap. And then when I was told that the "50 Shades of Grey" books started out as Twilight fan fiction, I could totally see how that made sense. Bella does everything Edward tells her to, like she is his total submissive. She is literally his slave in this book. Add that dash of overt sexuality and you have a classic BDSM relationship. The only thing that she really shows any backbone about is becoming a vampire. This is the only topic on which she doesn't just concede to her Adonis-like boyfriend wishes.

In the end the book wasn't terible but I do not understand the accolades and worldwide love that has been showered on it.
