I love the idea of Le Cirque de Reves, a magical, wonderful circus which just pops up somewhere for a few days then quietly slips away to pop up somewhere else. A circus which can only be visited at night and is a connection of a myriad of tents of amazing acts and wonderful contraptions. One where you can never visit every tent no matter how often you go back.
It is in this world that we meet two proteges of the long-time opponents Prospero the magician and Mr A.H. Unbeknown to them they are part of a game with no rules to see who can outdo the other by coming up with even more fantastical acts. Full of beautiful imagery and imagination and some lovely writing, I enjoyed this very much but felt that the characters could have been developed a little more as I wanted to feel more engaged with them. Both the main characters, Marco and Celia are rather shadowy rather than full blooded characters I wanted to care about.
