I wanted to enjoy this a lot more than I did. The premise - pioneer life in a magic-infused faux-America - was very engaging, but I felt the story dragged. Many chapters seemed to consist of, "We studied this, and I did this, and that was my year!" The conclusion also felt rushed. On the other hand, many of the secondary characters were very engaging - I'd love a book that focused on them.
