Everybody has heard of the Planet of the Apes. Even millennials have seen these movies either the glorious 70's campfest staring Charlton Heston, or the takes-itself-too-seriously, reboot series from a couple years ago. But only a select few steeped in genre fiction know of the 1962 book these movies are based on. Even I did not know that this book is actually a translation of a French novel.

The irony of this book is the plot is much closer to the Tim Burton debacle of 2001, staring Mark Wahlberg. As far as this book, like most of the novels written in the 50's and 60's, there is an unavoidable thread of white, male privilege throughout the book. It is pretty much a given that any feminist is going to find major problems with all the books for this era. The story is tight and well written. I liked how the plot is advanced using a message in a bottle. This is such a quaint mode.

A must read for any science fiction aficionado.
