Incident on a Small Colony

"Incident" is a novella set before "Code of Conduct", showing the missing years when Jani Killian was on the run. Jani tries hard to keep her head down. Don't learn their names, don't get involved, don't be too good at her job. Her skills at a documents examiner, though, is a point of pride, and what she discovers brings up a lot of old memories she'd buried. It's a slow build, but solid overall, a good teaser for the rest of the series or a standalone.
