On the first day of the 21st Century, the first practical "utopian" state declared its independence. With all the world looking on with skepticism or outright antagonism the Commonwealth was neither in the capitalist nor communist bloc - it called itself the first truly free state. To continue to exist it would have to outwit - and outfight - the entire world.

Chile's Rapa Nui, Easter Island -- home of the enigmatic stone faces, and site of the forced landing of the crippled NASA Space Shuttle Atlantis. For pilot Frank King, diplomat Juyce Fisher, and island governor, Ernesto Obregon, the crisis of the orbiter's near crash-landing was ony the beginning.

Beneath the unseeing eyes of the ancient gods, NASA's best minds had to build an emergency spaceport on a stone-age deset owned by a hostile nation -- before the shuttle's lethal rocket fuel could endanger the whole island... before local terrorists could take the rescue mission hostage... and before a web of internation tension and human passion could explode in violent confrontation on the island at the center of the world.

Tom Noels had to re-invent almost every medical technique to allow for weightlessness and the other unknown effects of space, and he improvised brilliantly -- but not always successfully.

He treated patients who were injured in ways underamed-of in medical history -- including a "bullet wound" from a micro-meteorite -- lost some, saved some and would save many more... if only he managed to stay alive himself!

On the planet Mercan there are no stars, no moon, no outer space...

The citizens of Mercan cannot conceive of worlds beyond their own. Their sun, Mercaniad, is prone to deadly, radioactive flare-ups, and the Mercans have organized their life around the need to survive The Ordeal -- until a strange visitor appears from out of nowhere.

The Enterprise, badly crippled and in desperate need of repairs, must seek help from a people who cannot believe in its existence.
