Ajax Calkins was not only the richest young man on Earth, but also the most eccentric. An incurabic romantic, his dream was to find some little world in space of which he could be king--a beloved and benevolent monarch, as in the days of old. It seemed that his dream had come true when, in response to an ad, a man who called himself Anton Smallways came to Ajax on behalf of some asteroid miners, saying that they would like to have a little kingdom of there own and inviting Ajax to be their sovereign.

Calkins' only friend at this time was one of the strange spider-beings of Mars, a creature which called itself the Third Least Wuj. The Waj had disgraced itself by Martian spider standards, and the little creature's only hope was to atone by performing some sort of exemplary service; overwhelmingly grateful to the Earthman for giving it an opportunity, it gladly accepted Ajax's offer of the Prime Ministership of Ajaxa.

All seemed well until Ajax and the Wuj discovered that Anton Smallways and his fellow so-called miners were not human beings, after all. They were amoeba creatures from Saturn, disguised as men, and the planetoid Ajaxia was not a planetoid, either: it was a vast spaceship constructed by the vanished race of an exploded planet which once had its orbit between Mars and Saturn. The fragments of this planet made up what we call the asteroids.

Though Ajax Calkins was wealthy enough to buy anything on earth his heart desired, the one thing he wanted most was strictly forbidden. That was a world of his own - a planet, however small, which would be his private kingdom in the sky. The Earth-Mars Space Administration stood in his path. They would tolerate no such 18th Century derring-do in the commercial and workaday planetary channels of the 21st Century. Empire-building was out.

But when an offer from a bearded stranger opened the way to just such an adventure, Ajax leapt at the chance. In his luxury spacecraft Destiny he shot out through the inner planets to the tiny world that waited a king - and, unwittingly to a monster outer-planet empire that waited a detonator for cosmic war.

When Warren Alton went off to a quiet rural district of upper New York State to investigate some strange news reports, he figured it would be just a new type of "flying saucer" scare-only this time people were seeing dinosaurs and flying lizards! But what that star reporter uncovered turned out to be more fantastic than prehistoric monsters and more incredible than UFOs. Kermit Langley, a crook hiding out in the desert, rescues the pilot of an extraterrestrial rocket and is turned into an interplanetary unguided missile before the humanoid critter--from Thuban by way of Pluto dies. He's had a message engraved on his armbone, and has four years to get it to Pluto, else he'll begin to vibrate until his bones fall apart. To make the mission not quite impossible, he's given the gift of unnoticeability. People--and things--can look right at him and not realize he's there.

Traveling backwards in time, Don Miguel had to undo the errors and interruptions o f other time-interlopers; he had to preserve the present. Even the most insignificant nudging of the past could entirely alter his world! And he suspected that this had already happened: that a maniacal genius crazed with a desire for nationalist vindication had plotted to alter the victorious outcome of the Spanish Armada of 1588 - thus changing recorded history and perhaps even imperiling the mighty Spanish Empire of 1988!

If Don Miguel did not successfully intercede, when he came back to the present he might find a different world... a different time... a time in which he probably didn't even exist!
