OK, so it took much longer than it should have but we have finally launched some of those new lists we've been talking about.

A special shout out to WWEnder Jim Harris for creating these lists and for working with us to get them up on WWEnd.  There are links to original articles by Jim that are well worth the read so don't miss that.  And of course to all our Uber Users for filling in the missing books.  You rock.

Let us know what you think of these new lists!

Great stuff. I've just been through and marked off the ones I've read. What went wrong in 1978?

Nice work on getting these up - what a great post-Christmas present!

James Harris did a really nice job of selecting books for these lists, so kudos to him!

1978 was just an unusually thin year for some reason.  The only book that I might conceivably add would be the Strugatsky's Definitely Maybe, but it's something of a cult book as opposed to being a defining book.

Still more books to try to get to!

It would be interesting to try to duplicate this with Fantasy - I wonder what that might look like.

Nice! I have even read some of them. List of books still to read is much longer though.

What I really like about these lists is the top 12 from each decade that Jim picked out.  If you just read those from all 5 decades you would have a nice sampling of SF spanning 50 years.  That's why we used the larger cover images to draw more attention to the list within the list for each decade.

This is really very nice list and nice add on for WWEnd and thanks to the team for adding it . I found some authors I missed previously. Does anyone have opinion on selection yet? I know it's about personal opinion, but in twelve books of '80, there are two Cards and two Buyolds, what I can't object, but no Gene Wolfe? Isn't that little bit strange? And The Fall of Hyperion in '90 on the list which is practically one book with Hyperion. But great list anyway.

I've decided to read a book from every year, in chronological order, starting with 1950. I'd set it up as a challenge, but I suspect it will take a very long time, and I dont really want to make it a chore. Maybe I'll set up a challenge for just the 50s, then add one for the 60s when I get near the end.

Dr.N.,
That sounds like a very workable way to approach this. I think a lot of people would like that format.

I've created a challenge for the 50s.
