Random quote: It was quite dark when he went by the towers of Tor, where archers shoot ivory arrows at strangers lest any foreigner should alter their laws, which are bad, but not to be altered by mere aliens. - Lord Dunsany (Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller)

I'm reading "A Mirror for Observers" by Edgar Pangborn which I recently picked up for $2 at a book fair. The cover proudly proclaims: "The novel which won the international fantasy award". I assumed it was an award covered on WWEnd, but no:

They certainly seemed to be on the right track, I wonder why it folded?

According to this:  http://www.gostak.org.uk/ifa/ifaindex.htm the award was not well received at the time partly because of the way it was set up: small panel of judges instead of a fan vote and the awards ceremony was a private event.  Sounds like they just couldn't get any momentum going.

There have been lots of awards to come and go like that.  The Gandalf Award comes to mind:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandalf_Award

That award is in the works now.  We're missing about a lot of books from the list so it'll take some time though.
