Though my knowledge of the Cthulhu mythos is sketchy at best, I had read and enjoyed the novella precursor to this, and so when Tor.com offered it for free, I grabbed it. And it's a compelling read so far; like The Chimes, I would probably have a far richer experience with more background knowledge and understanding, but so far, I'm quite hooked - in fact, I made the mistake of reading it before bedtime the other night, and so had a series of quite detailed dreams about it. (A Washington Post investigation, with details of historical and political implications, interviews with all the characters, etc.) And there is quite a bit here about racial and religious discrimination, genocide, stolen history, and a very palpable sense of lonliness and longing. A lovely, melancholy read.
