The Last to See Me is the story of Emma Rose Finnis, a young woman who tragically died too young. And it is the story of Philip Pratt, a "hunter" specially trained to clean locations of ghosts, who has been hired to remove the spirit of Emma Rose from the town she haunts.
This book is deeply melancholic. I fell in love with the character of Emma Rose and her sad story made me teary (something I very rarely experience with books). The book subtly probes issues of class and privilege, and quietly asks questions about life purpose and true love. The pacing is well done, never revealing too much too soon, and the quality of writing is just superb. The story is so immersive that I found the book unputdownable. This was very nearly a 5 Star book, but I thought the ending was a bit ambiguous and clunky.
The Last to See Me is unique and wonderful and one of the best ghost stories I've ever read. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy literary fantasy and/or stories that are dark without being gory and creepy.
