In The Agents of Dreamland a special government agent is investigating a doomsday cult with the assistance of another agent who is able to time travel. This brilliant novella is a modern twist on a short story by H.P. Lovecraft. It is subtly creepy with an ever-increasing mood of dread and horror. The story is told in a non-linear format, which the author handles extremely well, that only serves to add to the dark twistiness of the plot. In just over 100 pages, the author is able to create complex characters and a vivid sense of place, more so than in many novels of much greater length. Though The Agents of Dreamland is not my favorite by Kiernan, it is a powerful compelling piece of work that I enjoyed immensely.
