The Book of Speculation has two narratives - one about a circus in the 18th century and another about an unemployed librarian (Simon) in the present day. A book about the circus, which Simon received from an antiques dealer, ties the narratives together. The story abounds with secrets, curses, mysteries, and romance.
Overall, for me, it was just a good book that I never quite fell in love with. Intriguing - but not wholly original - plot. Interesting characters, but they were mostly lacking a dimension or two. Solid - but not spectacular - writing style. I enjoyed The Book of Speculation but I probably won't even remember it in a year or so.
