This book is considered by some to be YA because it features a young protagonist. However, while it contains moments of whimsy, it also delves deeply into serious themes, such as the damage that other people do us, as well as the damage we do to ourselves - and it is both dark and hopeful at the same time.
The worldbuilding is based on traditional folktales but, as is the author's custom, changed and updated with inventive new twists.
Call it YA, call it whatever you want... this work is absolutely AMAZING. I - an admitted non-YA reader - am quite happy to admit that I loved this. Young people may be able to enjoy it, but adults, I think, will find it absolutely entrancing.
I don't know how this author manages to make me love her writing - but manage it, she does indeed. Reading this made me feel like a deer caught in the headlights of some arcane witchery.
