The synopses for Kingfisher's books don't match what I usually look for in my SFF reading, but every book I've read by her (or her alter ego Ursula Vernon) has been an absolute revelation in terms of unpredictable storylines, worldbuilding, and character development. Her works are dark, but always hopeful; humorous, but always wise; sarcastic, but always kind.

The Clocktaur duology is a satisfying, unputdownable buddies-on-a-heroic-quest delight. It is full of darkness and adversity, with captivating characters (along with a high body count), and I highly recommend it.

Clockwork Boys should definitely be read first, before this novel.
