I thought that the first novel in this series was extremely well-done in its worldbuilding, especially with regard to the sentient plant and its interactions with humans over the course of generations. This sequel is not quite at the same level, but is still very good, especially with respect to the alienness of the various species and the way that "war" is waged on the more malign elements of the human landing party.
Recommended for those who appreciate especially imaginative and vivid science-fictional worldbuilding.
